Grass-Fed, Pastured Beef, Pork and Lamb
- M4-D Ranch - Contact: Paulette MastinThe meat was excellent! Averaged about $4.50-$5.00 a pound, but this was mostly steaks and roasts. The hamburger meat was really good. Since there was little fat, it didn't "shrink up" when I cooked it so it took much less to feed our family. The beef was already packaged and labled and delivered straight to our freezer. We bought a quarter of a cow for around $500. It lasted quite a while - maybe 4-5 months and we ate a lot of beef! Please mention that I referred you as I will get credit for a referral.
Organic Produce
- Downing Hollow Farms - Their CSA program is good. Not "certified" organic, but organic none-the-less. The last few years, you would buy a CSA share and then get a bag of goodies every week throughout the summer. Pick up was on Wednesday
- Windermere Farms - This farm is Certified Organic and the people are really nice. During Farmer's Market season they are at the AgriCenter on Saturdays and the Memphis Botanical Garden on Wednesdays. Last year they had U-Pick organic strawberries and blueberries. The price on the blueberries was a bit higher than you can get organic blueberries at Costco, but the price on strawberries was great. We bought some strawberries from them at the AgriCenter last year and they were hands-down the best strawberries I've ever tasted. They also have other produce and had "impromptu farmer's markets" throughout the fall. I received an email from them the other day with news about the upcoming CSA. Here's an excerpt from the email:
The CSA is a great opportunity for people who want to support the farm as a CSA member. CSA members purchase a $200, $250, or $300 share at the beginning of the season which they then spend like cash throughout the year at the farmers’ market. As members pick out their produce over the course of the season, we subtract their weekly selections from their credit balance. CSA members can choose as much or as little as they want each week, and they can shop from either the Wednesday and/or Saturday farmers’ markets. Members receive a weekly newsletter and a 10% discount each time you shop. We strive for a high variety of produce throughout the spring and summer seasons, though we consistently grow seasonal staples (like lettuce and tomatoes). A major benefit to this program is its flexibility. If you go on vacation your balance will be waiting for you when you return-no having to arrange for someone else to pick up your share or just losing it. You select what you want from our market table. Please note that some times during the year we sell out before the end of the market day so we encourage our CSA members to come early in order to have the largest selection of produce.
